I drove for the first time today down here and it was a bit of an adventure. I had to drive some kids to daycare, drive one of the Tias to the hospital, then later drive more kids to daycare. Anyway, an important lesson was learned. Here's the story.
We were driving to daycare and the Tia telling me directions says "derecho aqui". In my mind I had it that 'derecho' meant right. So I then took a right hand turn. She proceeded to say 'no, no, no' and I was thoroughly confused because I swear she said 'derecho'. Well - she did say 'derecho'. Which in some contexts does mean right. But when it comes to directions - 'derecho' means straight apparently. So we went for a little detour and she proceeded to explain to me that 'derecho' is straight, and 'derecha' is right.
