The Longest 5 Days of My Life

Don’t you hate how time goes fast when you want it to slow down, and it drags when you want it to speed up? Of my 20 years of life, I still haven’t been able to successfully figure out why this is. But I recently had the most painfully long 5 days of my life.

I broke my nose while wrestling with my 7 year old nephew last Saturday. Lame story, I know. I had him all pinned down except for his head, and he decided to use it to his advantage and head butt me from the side, which successfully broke my nose and made it severely crooked to the left side of my face. Not exactly a fun day. But the worst part was yet to come. A week later after the swelling had gone down, I went in to see a ear/nose/throat specialist. I had my nose re-broken and set back straight. This was definitely more painful than the original break, and I wouldn’t recommend doing it whilst awake, because I did, and I regret it! He strapped a little nose cast on me and told me I had to leave it on for 5 DAYS. Now before arriving there, I had declared to everyone I know that I would not wear anything on my nose, and I didn’t care what the doctor said. But after one of the most painful experiences of my life, I wasn’t about to chance anything.

I wore that nose brace for 5 whole days and it felt like time stood still. I tried to make a game out of it at first. In between classes I watched people’s reactions as they attempted to not look at it, but still kept glancing your way. It made me laugh every time, and I wanted to just say “it’s okay, I know I look like a dork, just stare, don’t try and hide it.” I actually met a lot of new people that would randomly be brave and actually ask what happened even though I’d never talked to them in my entire life. It was definitely a good conversation starter. After so many days of this though, it got rather old, and I was starting to get irritated. I just wanted to be able to walk through a computer lab without eyes jumping at me from all directions. And then the fateful, long awaited day came. I got my nose cast off, my nose is back to normal, and I can walk around campus once again, without eyes coming at me from all directions.
